What is AdBlue®

AdBlue® is a colorless liquid used in a car’s exhaust aftertreatment system (SCR) to reduce harmful emissions from diesel engines.
Euro 4 emission standards came into effect in Europe in 2005. This legislation required a reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions from the then-current level of 5.0 to 3.5 g/kWh. The Euro 5 standards enacted in 2008 lowered the permissible level even further to 2.0 g/kWh. In order to meet the new standards, major European vehicle manufacturers agreed on the new SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology. Thus, AdBlue® was born—a high-purity urea solution used as a reducing agent. SCR technology is already used in the new Euro 6 generation of heavy-duty and passenger vehicles.

How does SCR work?
With the SCR method, high NOx emissions produced by optimal combustion efficiency in the engine are treated by a catalytic converter. This process requires the addition of AdBlue®. A precisely defined volume of AdBlue® is sprayed from the injector nozzle into the exhaust flow, where it is first hydrolyzed and then converts nitrogen oxides (NOx) into nitrogen (N) and water (H₂O) inside the catalytic converter. AdBlue® is the ideal way to utilize the capabilities of SCR technology and ensure compliance with EU emissions legislation.

What You Need to Know About AdBlue®:

  • It is a non-toxic urea solution that acts as an exhaust gas reducing agent in SCR technology for diesel vehicles.
  • It is environmentally friendly and classified as a solution in the lowest water hazard class 1 (Germany).
  • Chemically, AdBlue® is a 32.5% high-purity urea solution, and its consistent quality is guaranteed by the DIN 70070 standard.
  • It consists mainly of water (approx. 67.5% water and 32.5% urea).
  • It is specifically designed for use in vehicle exhaust systems (SCR systems). It has its own dedicated tank in the vehicle, and filling is performed via a separate filler neck located behind the fuel flap. The AdBlue® level is shown on the driver’s display, alerting you when a refill is needed.
  • Consistent quality is ensured only by specialized laboratories that meet the prerequisites for approving liquid urea solutions; it is subsequently stored and distributed according to VDA guidelines.

AdBlue® Inspection and Refilling

Check the AdBlue® level regularly and top it up if a low-level warning message appears on the driver’s display. The emission control system constantly monitors the level, quality, and dosing of AdBlue®. If a problem occurs, a message appears on the driver’s display.
The service workshop can top up AdBlue® during routine maintenance; however, you can also refill it yourself if needed. Depending on driving style, ambient temperature, and system operating temperature, refills may need to take place multiple times between services.
AdBlue® filling is performed via a separate neck located behind the fuel filler flap or under the hood in the engine compartment.
1. Open the blue cap of the smaller filler neck intended for AdBlue®.
2. Add AdBlue®.
3. Do not overfill the tank.

What You Should Watch Out For:

– If the AdBlue® tank runs completely empty, starting the vehicle may become impossible on certain models. To restart the car, you must add AdBlue® of specified quality in the minimum amount indicated on the driver’s display. It is recommended never to let the tank run completely dry and to refill it in a timely manner.
– AdBlue® must be stored in its original tightly closed container at a temperature between -11°C and 30°C.
– The liquid should not be stored in direct sunlight.
– In cold conditions, keep in mind that the liquid freezes at -11°C.
